Nissan bets on Saudi Arabia to power its electrification goals

Extreme driving conditions and new EV partnerships position the Kingdom at the center of Nissan’s strategy

Riyadh – Sharikat Mubasher: Nissan is positioning Saudi Arabia as a strategic hub for its future mobility plans, with the Kingdom serving both as a testbed for advanced automotive technologies and a growing market for electrification.

Guillaume Cartier, Nissan’s Chief Performance Officer, told Asharq Al-Awsat that Saudi Arabia and the wider Gulf offer a unique environment for testing due to extreme climate conditions, long driving distances, and high-speed road use. These factors, he explained, require tailored engineering adjustments that ultimately strengthen Nissan’s global product development.

“Saudi Arabia is moving quickly toward the future, and our carbon-neutral ambitions are completely in sync,” Cartier added, highlighting the alignment between Nissan’s electrification strategy and the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 sustainability goals. He described future partnerships in the country as “inevitable.”

Nissan has also deepened ties with Saudi companies. Cartier pointed to the company’s partnership with Petromin, which began with local racing sponsorship in Jeddah and has since evolved into a global alliance in Formula E. He described it as more than sponsorship, calling it a “long-term strategic vision” that reflects Saudi Arabia’s push into electric mobility.
