Riyadh - Sharikat Mubasher: Saudi Arabia set 27 March of each year as the official day of the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI).
This decision was endorsed by the Cabinet in its session on Tuesday, as reported by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
The SGI, launched in 2021, focuses on combating climate change, improving quality of life, and protecting the environment for future generations.
It supports the Kingdom’s ambition to reach net zero emissions by 2060 through the circular carbon economy approach and accelerate the country’s transition to a green economy.
The SGI targets protecting 30% of Saudi Arabia’s land and sea by 2030, in addition to planting 10 billion trees over the coming decades, equal to rehabilitating 40 million hectares of land.
In November 2023, the SGI convened during the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28). It showcased various sectors being transformed by new thinking and the importance of investment for continued progress.
